My process started with sketching the composition including the typographical elements. (left)Next, I designed two characters who challenge traditional gender norms. This is something Flamoyant highlights. (right)I then textured out the subjects.Finally, a strong, graffiti-like typeface paired with a pixel typeface solidified the rebellious internet culture Electra's album was born out of.

I am honored to have had my illustration Veggie Wolf chosen to be a part of the 2026 Society of Illustrator's annual student gallery. Inspired by the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood, but with a much happier ending!

Within Procreate, an expressive thumbnail starts the process.

I then detail the line work and explore color before I paint.

Within Procreate, I start with a sketch including typography.

I draw out and paint my composition completely.

I then explore color and lighting before I paint.

Finally, the typography are added using Adobe Illustrator and Procreate.

I am Layna Malave, a local illustrator from the sunny
beach town of Sarasota, Florida. You can find me working creatively within kids literature and surface design.I create my work through eyes filled with magic, wonder, life... and a bit of humor, too! With a vibrant color pallet, relatable characters, and exciting designs I can easily connect with the inner child inside everyone. It is my goal to cater to that fun side of our humanity by bringing surprise into the mundane.Recently I have spread that joy locally into botanical illustrations for Marie Selby Botanical Gardens; and beyond to New York in the Society of Illustrator's annual student gallery.
